What is IELTS™
Candidates who wish to study or settle in a country with an English-speaking population take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test.
IELTS is an abbreviation for International English Language Testing System. IELTS tests one’s ability to WRITE, READ, LISTEN and SPEAK the English language on a scale of 1-9. This test is taken by candidates who wish to study abroad, are looking for a job or simply wish to migrate to an English-speaking country. The prime objective of IELTS is to test a candidate’s adeptness in the English Language. Evidently, English is the prevalent language of communication in most countries. Hence, this test is compulsory for such candidates.
There are two ways to take the test. One is traditional pen-paper based, whilst the other is computer-based. In IELTS, pen-paper-based, candidates are given a questionnaire and an answer sheet to write down their answers. Meanwhile, candidates taking IELTS computer-based sit on a computer and type their answers. For candidates who are more comfortable with their handwriting and handouts, pen-paper based is better. While candidates who prefer typing over writing, the computer-based IELTS is better.
You can register for the test online from IELTS IDP India. You must have a valid passport as ID proof to register for the IELTS test.
The registration fee for IELTS is ₹17,000 as of 2024. A candidate must confirm the amount when scheduling a test session and make the payment using a digital payment method.
The registration must be done a few weeks prior as the slots for this test are not available easily. It is the oldest and most famous English proficiency test. Hence, the slots are mostly booked.

- IELTS on Paper: Results for candidates who took IELTS on paper will be available 13 days after the test.
- IELTS on Computer: Results for candidates who took IELTS on Computer will be available 3-5 days after the test.
Each section of the IELTS test paper receives a Band Score out of 9. Which are later compiled into an overall score on a scale of 1 – 9.
- 9 = Expert user with a complete understanding of the language
- 8 = Perfect user, full operational command of the language
- 7 = Good user, good command of the language with occasional inaccuracies
- 6 & 5 = Competent and modest user, adequate command of the language but with mistakes
- 4 & 3 = Minimal users of the English language
- 2 & 1 = Almost a non-user with little to no understanding of the language
Two Modes Of Taking IELTS Classes

Pen-paper or Computer-delivered IELTS

Here, candidates sit in front of a computer where the screen has both passage and questions for you to read and select/write the correct answers. No extra time is given for noting down the answers in any module. IELTS on Computer is the best choice for those candidates with a handwriting that is hard to understand.
You get questionnaire and answer sheet handouts for writing and reading to read the passages/questions and write down answers. For the listening part, you get an answer sheet and an extra 10 minutes to note down the answers on the answer sheet, the extra time could be counted as a plus point for the candidates taking IELTS on paper.
